Why Does My Ridgefield Yard Stay Wet After Rain?

By Creative Minds Landscaping LLC · Solving western-CT drainage since 2015 · Updated September 2026

A Ridgefield yard stays wet after rain for three usual reasons: the ground slopes toward the low spot instead of away, the soil is heavy clay or ledge that won’t drain, or water is being dumped there by downspouts and neighboring grade. The good news is each cause has a proven fix, once you know which one you have.

Yard drainage and grading work to move standing water away from a home in the Ridgefield, CT area
Standing water is a symptom. The fix depends on where the water comes from and where it can go.

1. The grade sends water the wrong way

Water follows the surface. If your lot slopes toward the house or toward a flat low spot, that’s where it pools. Ridgefield’s hilly terrain makes this common: the natural pitch often runs the wrong direction for the part of the yard you want to use. The fix is regrading, reshaping the surface so water runs away from the house and the patio.

2. The soil won’t let water through

Much of western Connecticut sits on heavy clay and shallow ledge. Rain can’t soak in, so it sits on top for days. When the problem is below the surface, grading alone isn’t enough. A French drain, gravel and perforated pipe set below grade, gives trapped water a path out of the soil.

3. Something is dumping water into the yard

Roof downspouts, a driveway, or a neighbor’s higher grade can concentrate a lot of water in one corner. Piping downspouts away from the foundation, adding a catch basin at the collection point, and diverting the flow usually clears it up fast.

How to tell which one you have

Watch the yard during the next real rain. Water sheeting toward the house points to grade. Water that pools and just sits for days points to soil. Water gushing from a downspout or a single corner points to a collection problem. Most wet Ridgefield yards are a mix, which is why a quick on-site look beats guessing. Bad drainage also undermines patios and retaining walls, so it’s worth fixing before it damages your hardscape. Frequently asked questions

Do I need a French drain or just regrading?

If water pools because the surface slopes wrong, regrading usually fixes it. If water sits because the soil won’t drain, you need a French drain. Many yards need both.

Why is my whole yard soggy and not just one spot?

That usually points to soil, heavy clay or ledge that holds water across the lot, rather than a single low collection point. Subsurface drainage is the typical answer.

Can standing water damage my house or patio?

Yes. Water against the foundation, and saturated soil under patios and retaining walls, causes real damage over time. Drainage is one of the highest-value fixes on a wet lot.

How fast can drainage problems be fixed?

Smaller regrading or downspout work can be quick; a full French-drain system takes longer. We give you a real timeline after seeing the yard.
